  2. Uggghhhh. Watching this makes puts a pain in my wallet. I'll just buy a new Convertible Camaro. Love to buy a use SL 500 but the pain of having to work on a older car like 2001 just hurts

  3. Love this car. I traded my old 1992 Jeep Wrangler with 150k miles for a 1999 SL500 with only 76k miles a few months ago. I think it was the best trade I ever did. The SL is heavy and solid. The only thing is brakes are squealing like a pig. I checked the pads and they have only 35% wear. I can't get rid of the squeal.

  5. you need to be a good DIY to have one of these and I would suggest buying a parts car as well which you can get for 3K especially in order to troubleshoot. Yes, the engine wire harness and throttle body harness (separate) from 93-95 is going to be shot if it has not already been replaced. Some 92's and 96's. There should be dates on each. THE BIG THING IS THEY WILL LOOK FINE OR LIKE NEW BUT THAT IS JUST THE OUTER COVERING. ALL ARE FOOLED BY THIS. You have to find a place where you can see the actual wires. If you use it with either bad harnesses it will ruin a lot of expensive stuff that's almost impossible to troubleshoot without just replacing everything. OR it could burn your car to the ground. This is why used MB's are so cheap and just those couple of years gave all used MB's a bad name in the used dealer and repair world. I laugh at parts prices. You can find about any part used and like new. Even new parts are not expensive. It's amazing what you can get at Auto Zone etc. If you really really have to get a dealer only part, and you can't find it used, you used to be able to get them through for half price, not sure about now or where. i just did 10 years worth of repair for 200.00 and 3 weeks work. Be patient and just don't go for high price parts and a solution will come. You have to DIY on these because shops, even dealers, don't know these no matter how much they pretend.

  7. I have a 1998 SL500 since 2004 from Palm Springs, CA . This last year (here in southern sunny California) just began some age related issues & probably heat deterioration . I had to replace water pump, a/c & fix transmission leak, still need to replace the motor mounts. However, this car starts every day and I don't have to pay for a new car…I love my old Mercedes and it still looks great!

    front hydraulic cylinder soft top leak
    trunk high pressure struts lost pressure
    front shock struts mounts supports craked (was critical dangerous)
    trunk lock failed
    sun visor pivot cracked (both)
    interior dome ligth cracked (bad quality plastic)
    climate control center vents don't open
    driver side turn signal holder lock broke
    floor mats desintegrations by the black cover sponge
    I hope don't get more defects in this pretty boy was my dream car, now i been expend lots of money fixing all this factory problems. i still love it.
